The area where Greenville now stands was originally contested between the Cherokee and settlers until 1776, when a treaty ceded a sizeable portion of territory in South Carolina to settlers. The area was originally known as Pleasantburg, which changed to Greenville in 1831. The town itself was not incorporated as a city until 1869.

For years, Greenville was known as the “Textile Center of the World” due to the volume and quality of its textile manufacturing. The industry took off in the late 19th century and by 1917, it had become so prolific that the J.E. Sirrine Company even designed an exposition facility for the latest in textile products and machinery called Old Textile Hall.

These days, Greenville’s economy is much more diverse. Many foreign companies have chosen the city for their North American headquarters and the city features a number of higher learning institutions.
